Service Corporation International Announces the Promotion of Jerald L. Pullins to Senior Executive Vice President, Responsible for Worldwide Funeral and Cemetery Operations

HOUSTON, April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Service Corporation International (NYSE: SRV) today announced Jerald L. Pullins, Executive Vice President, International Operations, has been appointed Senior Executive Vice President. In his new position, Mr. Pullins is responsible for the Company's worldwide funeral and cemetery operations.

Since 1994, Mr. Pullins has been responsible for SCI's European Operations which include more than 2,000 locations in the United Kingdom and France, plus significant businesses in other European countries including Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Morocco, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. Additionally in 1997, Mr. Pullins assumed responsibility for Pacific Rim operations and subsequently led the Company's expansion into South America, with operations in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.

Jerry Pullins has a long and successful history with SCI and within the funeral service industry. In 1965 and 1966, he worked on the initial audits of SCI, then Southern Capital Corporation, while an employee of Arthur Young & Co. After service in the United States Army as an Officer in Vietnam, Mr. Pullins joined SCI in 1969 as a Vice President of Corporate Development. Subsequently, he managed the Company's Corporate Development Department, the Cemetery Division and the Southeastern Region.

In 1979, Mr. Pullins joined Merrill Lynch Realty as Chief Financial Officer and subsequently was named CEO, Merrill Lynch Mortgage Corporation which included Merrill Lynch Mortgage Backed Securities. In 1984, with a group of investors, Mr. Pullins formed the Sentinel Group which became one of the leading death care industry consolidators in the United States at that time. Sentinel merged with SCI in 1991.

In announcing the promotion, Mr. R. L. Waltrip, SCI's Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President stated, "Jerry is a very experienced and respected business executive with extensive knowledge of all aspects of our business. As of December 31, 1998, SCI affiliates operated 3,442 funeral service locations, 433 cemeteries and 191 crematoria. SCI provides funeral and cemetery services in 20 countries on five continents.
