Service Corporation International Comments on Findings of Florida Department Of Law Enforcement
HOUSTON, April 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Service Corporation International (NYSE: SRV) today responded to the reported discovery of human remains during an investigation conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement at Menorah Gardens Cemetery in West Palm Beach. The investigation follows a lawsuit filed in December 2001 alleging improprieties at the cemetery. While reported in the national media, the lawsuit and its allegations are confined to two cemeteries in West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale.
Commenting on the discovery, SCI President Jerry Pullins said: "From the beginning of this investigation we have cooperated fully with state agencies to determine the facts and bring the matter to resolution. Although we have conducted our own above-ground search of the West Palm Beach property, we welcomed guidance from any persons who may have had information that would help us determine the facts. The acts behind this discovery are abhorrent to our company and could not be more opposed to the policies, procedures, and standards of human decency that guide our operations.
"We request in the strongest possible terms that the authorities identify and bring appropriate action against the individual or individuals that committed these acts. We find it absolutely unbelievable and appalling that former employees or others had knowledge of or participated in acts of desecration, did not come forward with this information when asked, and withheld critical information from the company for months or years. We take any misconduct seriously -- especially when it involves the handling of human remains. We will cooperate thoroughly with state and local authorities to ensure that individuals responsible for this desecration are dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.
"We are working to bring this matter to a prompt and just resolution. Our primary commitment remains to the families we have served. In this regard, we intend to work with the appropriate state and rabbinical authorities to ensure that the remains are properly identified and reinterred in accordance with the wishes of the individual families involved."
